Background of the study
Pragmatic markers—linguistic elements that convey speakers’ attitudes, emotions, and intentions—play a crucial role in online communication. In Nigerian Facebook group chats, these markers facilitate nuanced interactions among users in an informal digital space (Obi, 2023). As participants engage in dynamic exchanges, the use of pragmatic markers reflects the adaptation of language to fit the immediacy and spontaneity of digital conversation (Ibrahim, 2024). Facebook group chats have become vibrant communities where social norms and cultural values are negotiated through subtle linguistic cues. This study investigates how these pragmatic markers are employed in group chats, examining the interplay between language, context, and digital culture. The research focuses on the ways in which pragmatic markers help manage interpersonal relationships, indicate politeness, and signal shifts in tone or topic (Chukwu, 2023). By analyzing extensive chat logs, the study aims to document the patterns of pragmatic marker usage and their implications for digital communication. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of how online environments shape the pragmatic aspects of language, thereby enhancing theoretical frameworks in digital sociolinguistics (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of pragmatic markers in face‑to‑face communication, there is limited research on their role in digital contexts such as Facebook group chats. Existing studies often overlook the subtle functions these markers serve in managing online interactions (Adebayo, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of how pragmatic markers adapt to digital environments and influence communication dynamics. Without systematic analysis, the nuances of online pragmatic behavior in Nigerian group chats remain poorly understood, limiting insights into the evolution of digital communication (Obi, 2023).
